The Aesthetics of Hand-carved Mahjong Tiles

‘The Art of Mahjong Craft’ is a collaboration between a father and daughter duo to add new values to the mahjong tiles, transforming an old product into modern art, adding unique features and technology through creative designs. One of its missions is to pass on this traditional art by elaborating the aesthetics of exquisite Mahjong tiles and revive this old tradition with a modern twist.

Through the eyes of a craftsman Ricky Cheung and his daughter illustrator Karen Aruba, it preserves the story of the ‘Traditional Mahjong Making Process’. One will understand the steps of tile making and feel the depth and crafting skill of each stroke, cut and drill.

The exhibit highlight – Illustrated by Karen Aruba and hand-carved by Ricky Cheung, the eight mahjong tiles depicting Wong Tai Sin district painted in brilliant color is the latest father-daughter duo collaboration. The concept idea is inspired from the uncommon design and mythology of the ancient Chinese mahjong tiles while the collaboration of the art and craft of the artist and craftsman is one of its kind to showcase brand new perspectives.
